Live Music Performance EXTERNAL CORE

Brief:

Your school is hosting an awards ceremony for local community organisations. You have been asked to provide a 10-15 minute performance appropriate to the event.

Your work: Must be suitable for the audience
If you work as a group each candidate in the group must be able to show their contribution. Each candidate will be assessed individually.

TASK 1 Planning

1.     My statement of personal aims:

Through my contribution to the event I would like to achieve the following goals:
I want to perform on stage by performing a 10 -15 minute set on stage and to develop my collaboration skills by performing with another peer. To develop my confidence I need to understand that all performers make mistakes and know my mistakes and weaknesses in order to improve. To develop my collaboration skills we need to communicate more when it comes to finding a time to meet up to practise as well as giving feedback to them.

I think that I have the following skills which I will use to help me achieve these goals:
I have the skills of cooperating with the group and team work because you have to be able to work together in order to perform, and I am a quick learner. For example if something in the song is changed I am able to adapt to it fairly quickly as long as we go over the song so i can get used to it.

I will know if I’ve achieved it because:

I will know if I’ve achieved it because I would've performed in front of my peers and gain positive feedback, which would make me feel better about the performance which would of made me less nervous.

How I will meet the expectations of the audience:
To meet the expectations of the audience I should have a setlist which isn't boring I tried to pick songs which are "top hits" that the audience may know and one song that I enjoyed myself.  The length should be about 10-15 minutes which is a perfect amount of time which isn't too long or isn't too short. The stage presence should be friendly and loud and clear when I introduce songs that I am singing.  I will stand in the middle of the stage so everyone can see me and the quality of the performance should be clear so people can hear me as well with my peers. To make sure it is, the volume of the instruments should be equal, so not too loud and not too quiet.

2.     Plan of my contribution to the performance

The requirements of the brief and how I will meet them:
The requirements of the brief was so that its suitable for local community organisations, which would last around 10-15 minutes in total. You can't have any bad language in the songs otherwise it would look tacky for the audience. I feel like the audience would be an adult age (18+)  so the songs must be appropriate. I picked 3 songs, one song that is a classic "Can't Help Falling in Love" one song that is pop rock/ acoustic rock which the audience may recognise "Lucky" by Jason Mraz and one song that I enjoy myself which is "Poison" by Front Porch Step".

What I intend to do:
I intend to perform on stage and I will play the songs
  • Lucky by Jason Mraz 3:21 (Sir playing guitar + Ross)
  • Poison by Front Porch Step 4:18 (Sir playing guitar + Ross)
  • Can't Help Falling In Love by Elvis Presley (Twenty One Pilots) 2:58 (With Ross)
I will play Poison by Front Porch Step first because I struggle with the song since the timing is confusing with the beat, so I feel like it makes sense to do the one I practise more first while its fresh in my mind. The second song I am going to sing is Lucky because I only struggle with the first chorus when Jason actually comes in however the rest of the song is fine. The last song is Can't Help Falling in Love because we've aced that song, and its our best one we've practised, so we saved the best till last.

How I will do it:
I practise by rehearsing with my partner and on friday lunchtimes and sometimes Wednesday with Mr Flowers as well as in class time. Sometimes we even come into the music department ourselves to practise. I would also practise it with the teacher since there are guitar parts needed as well as my singing tutor Miss Coligan.

Who I will need to involve:
I will need Ross to play bass in the songs and Mr Flowers to play the guitar parts as well as the ukulele since that is what the songs require. I had to do this because there were no backing track or karaoke versions of the songs so we had to learn the songs ourselves.  The sound crew would also be involved because they need to make sure all the amps and the microphone is working and to also make sure we're all loud enough for the audience to hear.

The resources I will need:
I will need a guitar for Mr Flowers for Lucky and Poison and ukulele for Can't Help Falling in Love which Mr Flower is going to play for the performance. Ross will need a Bass to play in the songs.  I will need lyric sheets just in case I end up forgetting the words or only to use them when I need to. Ross and Mr Flowers may also need the lyric sheets with the chords on since they're playing string instruments.

The time needed for each song/ activity:
  • Lucky by Jason Mraz 3:21
  • Poison by Front Porch Step 4:18
  • Can't Help Falling In Love by Elvis Presley (Twenty One Pilots) 2:58

Health and safety issues for rehearsals and the performances:

The noise levels need to be at a considerate level because if its too loud it can affect the audience. The cables need to be carefully placed and kept away because if there's too many cables around, the performers on stage run the risk of tripping over and may damage equipment. To prevent this we need to make the wires are not bunched up and are not just lying around in a way people can trip over them and at the same time we need to be aware of our surroundings on the stage.

My set lists
  • Lucky by Jason Mraz 3:21 (Sir playing guitar + Ross)
  • Poison by Front Porch Step 4:18 (Sir + Ross)
  • Can't Help Falling In Love by Elvis Presley (Twenty One Pilots) 2:58 (With Ross) Ukulele and bass

Style and Image:

Describe your style and image for the event. Make sure you justify your choices (is it appropriate for the audience?)
The style and image for the event would be casual for example pair of black jeans and a shirt. I think it should be casual because the performer should be relaxed and look friendly when they do perform, they shouldn't have to be dressed in smart clothing all the time. However they must not look to informal because it would look tacky. Furthermore if we don't bring in our own clothes in, we would perform in our school uniform however we would take our blazers off because sometimes it can be a bit tight and sometimes restraining for us when playing guitar or singing.

Ideas for the performance:

For it to run smoothly we need to rehearse so we will have confidence to perform it. We also need to make sure the sound of the equipment and instruments are ready so they don't cut out or sound weird when we perform. The staging must organised and tidy so no one trips over when walking on the stage since we also need to be considerate of other performers.

Staging and equipment needs:

  • Microphone : So people can hear me sing especially the people at the back.
  • Amps : So the sound can fill the room and everyone can hear it.
  • Bass guitar : For Ross because he is playing the bass guitar.
  • Guitar : For Mr Flowers because he is going to play guitar.
  • Extension wheel : So the plugs can go further in places however these need to be carefully placed so people don't trip over them.
  • Jack leads : For guitars plugged into the amps so people can hear them playing.
  • Phone : For music.
The performer would need to be in the middle so the audience can see them as well as the bass player and guitar player would need to be spaced out so they're not hiding behind the performer. There  would need to be a equal amount of space for each other because we would need our own space when we perform. There should also be enough space to the point where equipment are not bunched together to the point where it looks messy and tacky when the audience watch us.

Rehearsal Schedule

Rehearsal 1: 4th January (CONTROLLED ASSESSMENT)
Today we discussed about what songs I am going to perform in general for my 15 minute set, such as:
  • Lucky - Jason Mraz 3:22
  • Poison- Front Porch Step 4:19
  • Can't Help Falling in Love- Elvis Presley (Twenty One Pilots cover) 2:58
  • Off With Her Head- Ghost Town 3:44
  • I'm Yours- Jason Mraz 3:42
We played them to see if they were good enough to match my voice and for the bass player to play. We didn't want pick a songs which are too easy so we can have some sort of challenge to work with otherwise it would be kind of boring for us to do.

Rehearsal 2: 5th January (CONTROLLED ASSESSMENT)
Today I rehearsed Can't Help Falling in Love and Lucky with Mr Flowers which went well even though  he is new to the songs and I have also shown him the two others. We have decided to take I'm Yours  by Jason Mraz off since we need at least 10 minutes since we had far too many songs.

Rehearsal 3: 12th January (CONTROLLED ASSESSMENT)
Today Ross and I have practiced Can't Help Falling in Love with Mr Flowers. I thought it went well because we were playing together and Ross was learning part of the chords to fit in the song. To improve I think we should go through the song as a whole so it can run smoothly for the dress rehearsal.

Rehearsal 4: 19th January (CONTROLLED ASSESSMENT)
Today Ross and I have gone through what we did the day before (above). We listened through all the songs and we have decided to cross off Off With Her Head by Ghost Town because it would have been way over 10 minutes (around 14-15 minutes). We now have only 3 songs to do which great.

Rehearsal 5: 26th January (CONTROLLED ASSESSMENT)
Today Ross, Mr Flowers and I have gone through Poison and we practised it again. We have discovered that the chords were different because it sounded differently for the string instruments. However I've done everything correctly.

Rehearsal 6: 2nd February (CONTROLLED ASSESSMENT)
Today Mr Flowers and I practised Lucky by ourselves because Ross wasn't here, we practised together and it sounded fine however there were some adjustments to be made for the guitar as we were playing.

DRESS REHEARSAL ON STAGE and rehearsal in practice room: 8th February (2 hours) (CONTROLLED ASSESSMENT)
Today we practised the vital songs over and over again which was Lucky and Poison. To improve Poison I need to know the timing of the 2nd chorus and to improve lucky I need to improve the pitch because it sounded a bit flat.
When we done the dress rehearsal I felt like I could of done better however my singing was in time with the songs tempo. To improve I must finish the song because I didn't know when to come in Poison since I wasn't used to the last minute changes which were made,

VIDEO FROM REHEARSAL:

Dress Rehearsal

Strengths Reflection:

As a whole the performance was okay, although there was a mistakes we still got on with it however what spoiled the performance was that I messed up on a chorus with Poison because I didn't know when to come in so I panicked.  I communicated with the audience by introducing myself as well as the other performers and music pieces. I thought my setlist was engaging because I picked classic hits that people would know and one song that I chose myself.

Me: I felt like I sung well and was in time with the other performers. Ross Tucker: Ross did well in the performance he played well and in time with Mr Flowers and I.  Mr Flowers: Mr Flowers also did well especially when he had to learn the songs in a short amount of time. Overall we were all in time which was good.

Improvement Reflection:

If I was to perform again I would like to get through it without making a fuss like I did in my dress rehearsal. Mr Flowers did miss out a chorus so I messed up along the way which caused the performance to stop, so next time I do need to carry out the performance and try cover my mistakes smoothly.

Improvement #1:
Strategy: How could you make that improvement?:
My voice was flat for Lucky on the lower parts, to improve I need to practise that more with  my music teacher. To improve I could record myself to see if I have improved those flat notes, and to do the voice exercises with my tutor which help strengthen my lower pitch a bit more as well as my high pitch.

Improvement #2:
Strategy: How could you make that improvement?:
Knowing when to come in. There was a part in Poison where I didn't know where to come in, I knew there was a instrumental bit in the middle of verse 1 and verse 2 but I think we got a bit confused, so I think we need to run through that.

Improvement #3:
Strategy: How could you make that improvement?:
To improve I feel like I need to make eye contact with the audience because I felt like I was looking around a lot because I was nervous. To improve I would focus on one spot (e.g the clock) so it looks like I'm looking directly at the audience.

Feedback from others:

From a member of the audience my singing was in tune with the song however to improve it was to finish the song. I did know the song lyrics but I didn't know when to come in. From the teacher my voice was a bit flat in Lucky in some parts so I need to practise them.

How this feedback helped with my evaluation of the performance:

It helped me know what I need to improve and the good feedback made me have confidence. I feel like the dress rehearsal gave me a bit more confidence as well. I thought it would sound bad but until I listened to it myself it didn't sound that bad at all than I thought it would be.

Conclusion:

Overall I didn't think the performance was that great however it was okay because I feel like I could do better and I felt like I didn't sound very good through the speakers but the feedback given to me made my confidence build a bit more. What I thought was successful was that I managed to do it even though I didn't do it very well. To improve I felt like I should of just carried on with the performance and cover up the mistakes other than giving up throughout.

Rehearsal 9: 9th February (CONTROLLED ASSESSMENT)
We practised Can't Help Falling in Love and we felt like we didn't have to rehearse that one as much as we did because it sounds perfectly fine the way it is. The only thing that needs to be improved is for Ross to learnt the chords of all the other songs.

PERFORMANCE: WEDNESDAY 22nd February (CONTROLLED ASSESSMENT)
Today we've practised the songs thoroughly through period 1 and 2, to pick up the little mistakes we've made to make it sound much better.  Because I didn't get the structure and the timing of Poison I had to ask when to come in and such because we messed up during the dress rehearsal since I was used to singing with the backing track guitar other than the guitar. I felt the performance went well however I had a dry throat which didn't help that much. To improve I need to add another song (Solo!) because it had to be 15 minutes with a backing track since the recording was 11 minutes.

NAOMI FINAL PERFORMANCE

TASK 3 Evaluation

Strengths Reflection:

I got through it better than the dress rehearsal without any hassle therefore I think the dress rehearsal gave me a bit more of confidence. As a group it went well although Mr Flowers did stumble on some parts which thrown me off as well, without making a fuss over it like I did last time I felt like I managed to overcome those mistakes smoothly. As a whole we were spot on time and I sung loudly and the instruments were loud enough to hear.

I think I've met my target a little bit because I've gained some confidence to sing on the stage, instead of singing in front of my friend I sung in front of someone else who I don't know who gave me good feed back.

Improvement Reflection:

If I was to sing again, I feel like to have more faith in myself however I was a bit more confident but I do feel like I can do better. I felt like the microphone could of been a bit louder however I did sing loud enough for the audience to hear.

Improvement #1:
Strategy: How could you make that improvement?:
To improve I feel like when I sing I should pronounce the words more stronger because it looks messy. I will improve it by singing the words stronger when I practise and listen to myself.

Improvement #2:
Strategy: How could you make that improvement?:
I felt like the way I stood wasn't very great so to improve I should stand with more posture or add some movement when I'm on stage to look less nervous and confidence, and also to look like a professional performer.

Improvement #3:
Strategy: How could you make that improvement?:
To improve I shouldn't look at the lyric sheets. This will help my eye contact with the audience however I do know the lyrics to the songs, but because I was nervous at the same time I felt like I had to look at the lyrics so I wouldn't mess up.

Feedback from others:

From a member of the audience they said the eye contact was there but it could be improved. They also said the movement could be improved to help look less nervous. Also to try not to rely on the lyric sheets.

How this feedback helped with my evaluation of the performance:

This feedback helped with my evaluation because it shows what went well and what I needed to improve on. They noticed I was making eye contact however because I was nervous I was looking at the lyric sheet and also because I was nervous again, I didn't really move around on the stage or looked like a professional performer.

Conclusion:

Overall, I think the performance went well. I felt like I was successful in getting through the whole performance last time because in the dress rehearsal I stopped half way through because of a mistake and I wasn't able to finish the 10-15 minutes worth of songs. As a performer to improve, I need to have eye contact with the audience or at least look like I do and stand in a way that doesn't make me look nervous.
